Getting through an audition is a major step. Debuting is another. But what happens after that? Our “30 Years of K-pop in Numbers” guide looks at the gap between making a debut and building a lasting career—and why your preparation should look beyond the first stage.

## What the numbers show

A 2026 study by Kim Jeongseob examined 1,182 idol groups that debuted between 1996 and 2025\. The figures below describe that historical group sample.

| Measure | Result |
| ------------------------------------------------------ | ---------- |
| Groups studied | 1,182 |
| Groups that sold over 300,000 copies of a single album | 42 (3.55%) |
| Average period of group activity | 4.12 years |
| Still active three years after debut | 55.03% |

The sales threshold refers to **one album**, rather than a group’s total career sales. The three-year figure measures continued activity, rather than album success. Neither is an individual applicant’s chance of passing an audition. ## The biggest groups do not tell the whole story

When you follow K-pop, you often see the artists with the largest audiences: BTS, SEVENTEEN, Stray Kids, NCT, EXO, TWICE, TXT, and ENHYPEN. Their success makes the industry visible around the world.

But a playlist, a sold-out concert, or an album chart only shows part of the picture. In the study’s sample, 42 groups crossed the single-album 300,000-copy threshold. Looking at the full group population gives a different view from looking only at the biggest names.

## Debut does not guarantee a long career

The reported average activity period was 4.12 years—about 59% of a seven-year initial contract period. Just over half of the groups were still active at year three.

A contract period and an active career are different things. A group can have a contract without maintaining the same pace of releases and performances. The data also spans several generations of K-pop, so it should be read as historical context, rather than a forecast for a new group.

## Prepare for the work after your audition

The message of our guide is simple: **do not prepare only to debut.** Work on a voice and a performance that you can keep developing.

- **Know what makes your voice recognizable.** Choose a song that lets your tone and expression come through.
- **Build consistency.** Practice delivering the same phrase clearly across several takes, instead of relying on one good recording.
- **Turn feedback into a specific task.** Identify the phrase, pronunciation, or transition you will work on next.
- **Review your progress.** Keep recordings so you can hear what is changing and what still needs attention.

These are training choices you can act on now. They help you approach an audition with a clearer understanding of your strengths and the work ahead.

## Find the voice people remember

Debut is a milestone. Developing as an artist continues after it. If you are unsure what to focus on, bring your voice to coaches who can help you identify your next step.
